On March 31, 1939 Britain declared that it would support this Eastern European nation against the likely German invasion. But in August, Germany and the USSR signed a secret non-agression pact dividing up Poland.

When Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 it marked the beginning of World War II. On September 17, 1939 the Soviets invaded eastern Poland.
