: : The SAS started in W.W.II as a form of small operations force. Their founder, David Sterling of No.8 Commando, got permission to form these raiders in the Middle-East when he personally was faced with having to either join another Commando or return to his original unit when No.8 were being disbanded.
: :
: : The SAS was just one raider unit which emerged during the war, like the Special Boat Section, Special Raiding Squadron, Small Scale Raiding Force, Combined Operations Pilotage Party, Long Range Desert Group, even Popski’s Private Army! The largest body of specialist raiders were the Army Commandos later augmented by the Royal Marine Commandos. Most of the raiders were disbanded or amalgamated during or at the end of the war, including the Army Commandos themselves. The Army kept on the SAS as a small affordable unit which we know has survived in a specific roll today.
: :
: : If you want a much better insight to the whole development of raiders in W.W.II, read ‘The Commandos 1940-1846’ by Charles Messenger. ISBN 0-7183-0553-1 (caution - there are also a lot of ‘junk’ books about!)

If the person posting this message left their e-mail address, we inserted some random characters to prevent spammers from harvesting their address. Spammers do this with automated "bots" that constantly search the Web looking for e-mail addresses. Since you're a human being, not a bot, you can easily obtain the real address by removing the text that says "ThisisToPreventSpam-XYZ-RemoveThis." including the random number XYZ and the period at the end. For example, <whitten@ThisIsToPreventSpam-123-RemoveThis.despammed.com> would become <chris-(@)-interesting.com>.
