World War II Forum: Grandfathers

Posted by: Theresa ( on 17 Sep 2002 at 11:21:16 PM

Both of my grandfathers served in World War II. Charles H. Zimmerman Sr. served in the 8th Infantry, 28th Regiment. He was drafted in 1941 even before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and fought all the way through the end of the war, moving from Omaha Beach all the way into Germany. He was twice taken POW, escaping each time, and he was also wounded a number of times. Armpha E. Dowell Jr. served in the 392nd Bomb Group, 577th Squadron as a Tail Gunner on a B24. He was shot down on a mission over Hamburg, wounded and taken POW on August 6, 1944. He was later released. Both of my grandfathers returned home to Kentucky. Charles Zimmerman passed away in November 1996. Armpha Dowell is still living in Louisville.
