Marine Corps Features

Marine Dogs

Marine Dogs Our first feature here is a section from William W. Putney's book ( "Always Faithful: A Memoir of the Marine Dogs of WWII."

Putney was the leader of a Marine Corps War Dog Platoon at Guam. Here he recounts his stories of the World War II contributions of Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, and other dogs -- as well as what happened to the dogs after the war. Click here to read about the "dogs of war."

The second feature is a chapter from Patrick K. O'Donnell's excellent book "Into The Rising Sun: In Their Own Words, World War II's Pacific Veterans Reveal the Heart of Combat."

In this chapter, O'Donnell gives Marine Corps veterans from Guadalcanal the chance to tell their stories in their own words. We've converted the original chapter into sub-sections so that it's easy to read online. Click here to start reading "Guadalcanal: Starvation Island" or jump to any one of the sub-sections below.
